 Wie bereits die letzten Tage zeigte sich der Vormittag mit relativ wenig Wind und erst am Nachmittag gab es passende Bedingungen für einen Wettkampf. Head Judge Duncan Coombs machte das beste daraus und die erste Runde konnte beendet werden.
Da die Vorhersage für die kommenden Tage extrem gut aussieht wurde der Wettkampf am frühen Abend, nach der ersten Runde, beendet um am Wochenende den Zuschauern möglichst viel Action zeigen zu können.
Fahrer des Tages war Maarten van Ochten (JP/Neilpryde/MFC) der ,etwas nervös, seinem Gegner Philip Koester gegenüber stand. Der Deutsch-Canario, als Wavespezialist bekannt, ließ erahnen dass er einige fette Freestylemoves drauf hat, aber Maarten ließ Philip mit den neuesten Moves noch keine Chance. G-44 wird in der Double angreifen und es wird interessant zu sehen wie Philip sich schlagen wird. Für das Wochenende besteht die Chance auf etwas Wellen und hier könnte der Zweite des Pozo Grand Slams mit seinen Air Moves punkten.

 Despite the wind not blowing at full force, head judge Duncan Coombs made the most of a late afternoon breeze which enabled the first round of heats to be completed. With an epic forecast for the next few days, the organisers decided to halt the proceedings early in the evening, so that the competitors could perform to a higher level for the weekend crowds.
The sailor of the day was tour regular and current top five ranked styler, Maarten Van Ochten (JP, NeilPryde, MFC) who would have been forgiven for feeling a little bit nervous going into his heat against the 2009 Pozo wave champion, Philip Koster (Starboard, NeilPryde, Dakine). All eyes had been on Koster during practise to see how he would perform in the discipline of freestyle, especially in the lighter winds which the contest was being held in. Koster looked like he had plenty of moves in the bag, but they were no match for the seasoned freestyle pro, Van Ochten who pulled off a more diverse range of technical moves in the six-minute heat. There’s no doubt Koster will fight back in the double, especially if the forecast comes to fruition.
The outlook for the coming few days of competition looks fantastic with strong trade winds and a small swell hopefully arriving in time for the weekend. Today was simply a taste of what’s to come, with the World’s best yet to unleash their huge power moves in front of the judges and world media.
